Barry Jones died on 28th January 2008, following a short illness. Barry was our musical director from 1996 to 2006.
Born in Derby in 1937, the youngest son of musically talented parents, Barry trained as a lawyer but gave up private practice to teach law. His love of music, particularly singing, took him to the mixed voice close harmony group 'Spa Harmony' based in Droitwich and later to Worcester Male Voice Choir where he became conductor in 1996. His singing experience ranges through choral singing, opera, oratorios, madrigals and barbershop to a favourite of his, Gilbert and Sullivan. His devotion to music and its interpretation was an inspiration to the disparate band of choristers under his baton. They appreciated not only his musicianship but his attention to detail and quest for continuous improvement. He delighted the choir and its audiences throughout his time in charge with his own brand of humour and proved himself to be a truly gentle man.
All roles come to an end and Barry retired from his post as conductor of the choir towards the end of 2006. He left behind a competent and accomplished choir, ready to move on to its next stage of development.
Barry returned to the choir as a very able baritone singer at the beginning of 2007 where his patient nature and vast musical knowledge continued to be of great help, especially to newer members of the choir. Barry's last full performance with the choir was at the Annual Christmas concert in Pershore Abbey on 8th December .
A service to celebrate Barry's life was held on Monday 11th February at St Paul's Church, Worcester.
